If I were a mixer inventor I would suggest them 12AX7 Tubes for Warmth factor in the main out.
We need Channel strips who are complete…6 knobs for eq, 6 knobs for effects, gates/compressor and q factor per channel plus sd card recorder.
The Mixer misses 4 band vari eq plus q factor…. then it would be perfect, inserts are missing too..afaics..
Best innovative thing is SD Card recording.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world´s most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about Waldorf Kyra. Is this high-end synth and VA synthesis flagship even a real Waldorf? Is it a wavetable synthesizer? What’s an Exodus Valkyrie?… what’s so great about FPGA technology and do we really need another digital synth in a world full of software instruments and plugins?

A look at why some synths are more expensive than others. The Prophet 6 is 3.5 x the cost of the Behringer Deepmind 12. Is one overpriced, or the other amazing value…?
From a practical perspective what are the differences and is the price difference really justified?
I’m not saying one is overpriced or the other is cheap or poor quality, I’m really trying to take a completely unbiased view of the differences.
If you can’t get your hands on ether or both you may have wondered why yourself…. hopefully this can go some way to answering the question.”

“I think we were kind of realizing before everybody else that…the software stuff is cool, but it´s no fun and and it doesn´t sound quite as good and so we started getting back in the hardware and then of course the rest is history. It´s in the last 10 years everybody, not everybody, but a lot more people are making that same conclusion and drifting away from software and getting back not only into hardware, but specifically into analog hardware, because it´s just got that sound, it´s got the immediacy a lot that you don´t get out of digital sense, you know, I can go on forever, a million reasons for why it´s so much better. .. I´m sure there are a lot of uh musicians who go straight to hardware..become
keyboard players just because they can do so much more with it. (Dave Smith)(2014)”

The WASP is an iconic British synthesizer designed by Electronic Dream Plant in 1978.
…
They only traded until around 1982, but that wasn´t the end of their synth story. Chris H. in particular has had a prolific career in the industry, founding the Oxford Synthesizer Company in 1983 and releasing the (also iconic) OSCar and subsequently (after work with Akai), he joined Novation, who are still trading to this very day.
Back to 1978, the concept of the WASP was to build a powerful, low cost synthesizer.
That seemed to have worked as one of the original reviews I found uses the headline
“The Synth we can all afford” but still dubs it a professional instrument.”
I also found a Moog price list dated June 15th 1978 and it lists the Minimoog as $1,995, the Multimoog as $1,495 and the Micromoog as $895. Assuming they sold for about the same in the UK, the equivalent prices would be approximately £1,090, £820 and £490 respectively. The aforementioned WASP review also states that an Odyssey is still over £1,000 in 1978, so with the WASP priced at £199 this demonstrates what a bargain (Schnäppchen/Angebot) it was at the time.
In fact, I had a brief conversation with a friend who remembers running out to buy it the moment he heard about it in 1978 and he still has his. …
In this video I breakdown its features and use it to make a short track.”

“That posed a great threat to the medical community, to the drug community, I am talking about labs, laboratories, that create drugs and to insurance companies, because, unfortunately, in this country, we don´t cure things, now I don´t can talk about other countries, we mostly don´t cure things, we treat things, because there is a great deal more money in treating than there is in curing people, now I disagree with that, I believe in abundance. So if you do cure people there is always sick people that needs to be cured, however that´s not how of the monopolies work. So after all he has been through…with the experiment and the proof how cancer can be treated this way and cured, caused a threat, and the next thing you know he´s blacklisted. He´s blacklisted…and his laboratory was broken into, most of his things, his records were stolen or destroyed, his microscope was also extremely damaged. His microscopes, so he promoted fear and threat to the status quo and it took him the rest of his life to attempt to rebuild what he has learned what he has proven to the world.”
“This man was devastated…and as I said his laboratory,.. it was a house basically, everything was destroyed or stolen and his spirit was crushed after that, because he was blacklisted and this caused a great deal of strress to him and he started to drink…his wife´s passing created more trauma for him and put himn into an evebn darker place…he was a broken person and when his wife died that was a great additional crush, because she was his support, they didn´t have any children, so the prodigy was at the end of the line for his family…he continued on…when he passed away… he was a broken man and it is sad, because he was wiped away with regard of his studies and his accomplishments…”
“And he did create a machine called a Rife Machine, now I hesitate to talk about it, because people will say. “oh, that´s a rip off and bla, bla bla..”.. yeah, there are people who will rip off anything, we know this, so you have actual rife machines that do what they are supposed to do and then you have ones that aren´t and you have to be very cautious a nd the Rife Machine was also banned from being sold in this country for many decades, the only way you could get it was to purchase it from Europe and you really weren´t allowed to share with anyone that you had it.
It´s a little more in the open now then it was then, but there is still a stigma attached to it, because of the naysayers, because of fear…
Love is not just I love you, it´s about acceptance, it´s about caring, it´s about anything positive, love is growth, fear is not and again right now there is so much fear, not only in this country, but around the world and you will see how people are treating one another and that comes out of fear…and that´s why he get swepped up in like so many brilliant people do.”
“He also was a doer, he was a brilliant pioneer, this Rife machine works on frequency…everything around us is vibrating.”
“In regard to the Medical community, because even to this day, in 2019, …they still teach newtonian physics in medical school, well, there is quantum physics and that´s different than newtonian physics and what we are talking about here is quantum physics, but they are still teaching newtonian physics to people who want to go into the medical field and that limits them with regard to how they see the world and I am not saying there is anything wrong with that, I am just saying that it´s a different Universe.”
“The traditional or the Holistic Medicine which talks more about the Quantum Physics.”

There are many examples of how the knowledge of the Ancients can be lost.
Throughout history invasion and conquest have often occasioned the destruction of ancestral and indigenous knowledge. Egypt suffered a succession of invasions and annexations by the Persians, the Greeks and then the Romans, as the monotheistic religions became anchored to the powers of empire in the east and west, so it was that indigenous narratives and wisdom traditions became suppressed. The influence of writers like Socrates and Plato important writers whose own understanding had plumbed the sources of ancient Egypt was excised from the mainstream of Christianity. Church Fathers who had drawn on their wisdom found themselves sidelined and excommunicated. The hermetic texts, though
popular for a long time among early Christians, became regarded as subversive and dangerous, yet their influence continued to inform the thinking of mystics and scholars down the ages, writing in the fourth century BCE the Greek philosopher Plato openly stated that while many of his conclusions were reached purely by applying logic to things we can all observe, he had reached other significant conclusions, things he believed, but could not prove. The source of that information Plato said was ancestral memory, specifically the priestly knowledge of ancient Egypt, like Hermes in the dialogue with Asclepius, Plato was eager to keep what remained of ancient Egyptian wisdom alive. It’s in that context that Plato reports that he is concluded that there are other entities occupying our Universe, being similar to ourselves who reside on what he describes as islands in the sky and he said that these beings live longer than we do, they’re more highly intelligent than we are and their understanding of the universe and what we would call outer space is far more advanced than our own and though we said he couldn’t prove it Plato wanted to mark that knowledge on the wall, the notion of a more populated universe or of higher beings were ideas that Plato did not want to see forgotten. In the
1500s from Naples Italy another student of the hermetic texts emerged in the Dominican friar: Giordano Bruno. Bruno study of the hermetic texts
led him to some far-reaching conclusions as a Dominican friar Giordano Bruno was a devoted scholar and from his study of the hermetic texts: Bruno concluded just as Plato had done 2,000 years before that we are not alone in the universe that there are other entities populating the cosmos and the other planets in our Galaxy may be home to extraterrestrial civilizations. Well, unfortunately he fell foul of the Roman Catholic Church and in 1600 the Inquisition decided to send the world a signal that such conclusions had no place in Catholic Christianity and so they executed this poor Dominican friar Giordano Bruno and they made a public
show of it by burning him to death, in a public square, that’s a very forceful way of ensuring that ancient memory gets forgotten.
In the dialogue with Asclepius the character of Hermes laments the
forgetting of Egypt’s deities, these higher beings depicted in human-like and hybrid forms, by contrast in the Bible, the successive leaders Moses and Joshua instructed the people to forget the other higher beings, the Elohim, the powerful ones. In the Bible there’s a very deliberate kind of forgetting that we see written into the narrative, the Ten Commandments, famously begins with a command to serve no other Elohim, no other powerful ones, serve only Yahweh and then follows an instruction not to depict anything they’ve seen on earth or in the heavens, so don’t serve them, don’t bow down to them, don’t even depict them the memory of these other entities has to be excised absolutely and then in the Book of Joshua we’re told that Joshua who’s the successor to Moses calls upon the Hebrew people to never again serve the powerful ones of Abraham and Sarah’s ancestral culture and that’s the culture of the Sumerians. do not serve the powerful ones of your Sumerian heritage or the powerful ones of Egypt. Again there’s this forgetting being enforced, the memory of higher beings what the Sumerians indicated as sky people had to be written out of the story and similarly the Egyptian memory of higher beings had to be forgotten and that’s why Theodosius, seeing himself as a Christian Emperor in the vein of a Moses or a Joshua, illegalized these memories and banned the narratives that kept them alive. When Plato referred to the knowledge of higher beings, including these others who live on islands in the
sky, with all their advanced knowledge of the cosmos it’s interesting to me that he appeals on the one hand to information gathered through altered
states of consciousness and on the other to the lost cannon of ancient Egyptian memory, by citing that knowledge he makes it clear that the story of a more populous universe is one that Plato wanted remembered, he did not want that knowledge to remain buried and forgotten. The character Hermes laments the dying of a culture, he says darkness will be preferred to light and death will be thought more profitable than life, no one will raise their eyes to the heavens, good people, spiritual people, seekers of truth, will be considered insane. The vulgar and careless will be considered wise, the madman will be thought a strong man and the wicked held up as good, only those who bring evil messages will remain, they will mingle with humans and drive them into all manner of recklessness and crime into Wars an theft and frauds and all things hostile to the bodies and souls of human beings. If you think of the wars being prosecuted by the world’s powers even as we speak or think of government corruption the gravy trains the big bank bailouts, the theft and hoarding of wealth from the 99% by the 1% or consider the brutalization of our politics and the polarization and dumbing down that we’re seeing right now of public conversation, if you think about our veneration of wealth or how we gaze in adoration at the 1% and at the same time lower all our compassion towards the poor to refugees to anyone more needy or more desperate than ourselves can any of us look at these things in our world right now and not see that what Hermes forewarned is happening before our eyes.”
“…after the fire and flood the Creator will rebirth the creation, nature itself gets healed, love and wonder restored, because over and above all human affairs above and beyond every messenger or deity or higher being, the Creator is everything good, freely favoring human welfare, Hermes says. Walter Scott’s famous translation of the hermetic text uses the traditional language of gods and angels, but I think after another two millennia of religion, it can sometimes be more helpful to demystify some of that language and realize that these texts are speaking about what we might call higher beings and messengers from other realms. Hermes hope is in a cosmic power a conscious presence in the very fabric of space, he calls it the mighty fabric, it’s a presence of goodness and love for Humanity that operates through everything in the Universe, as we perceive it.”

“When the character Hermes speaks of Egypt he is lamenting the loss of ancient Egyptian knowledge of our world and the universe and the order harmony and spirituality that he saw as emanating from it, but Egypt also serves Hermes as a metaphor for this world, the observable realm. Hermes is saying that all that we see on earth is a projection or likeness of another realm that we cannot see, the whole universe he says is contained in microcosm, in things we can study on earth.. and that is cutting-edge science, that’s something quantum researchers is telling us today, but Hermes is absolutely confident that if we will study and remember and listen to the almost lost notes of ancestral memory, that presence of goodness, which freely favors the welfare of human beings, will
re-emerge and reorder how we live together on planet Earth.”
“..in the words of Hermes to Asclepius such is the new birth of the cosmos a making again of all things good a purer and more inspiring restoration of all nature all to unfold in the passage of time by the eternal will of the creator…”

This is the Roland MC707 groovebox and sampler and my in-depth review of it. Sponsored by Storyblocks Audio.
“Roland MC-707 review
The latest reincarnation of Roland’s groovebox range promises DAW-less track creation. MusicRadar steps out of the box”
“OUR VERDICT
It lags behind some rivals on the sampling front, but on the whole, the MC-707 is powerful, well-designed and a lot of fun.
PROS
Packed with lots of quality sounds.
Great effects, plus external send/return loop.
Very well thought-out workflow.”
CONS
No one-shot sampling or loop-slicing.
Lots of menu-diving.”
“Roland’s MC range of all-in-one grooveboxes has lain dormant since the release of the MC-808 in 2007. Much like their counterparts in Akai’s MPC line, these sampler and synth-equipped sequencers fell out of favour with much of the general public as music-making software became more powerful and modern tools like Ableton Live and NI Maschine made hardware solutions look old hat.
However, over a decade on there’s a new interest in ‘studio in a box’ tools that allow electronic musicians to produce and perform full tracks without a computer.
With the success of their recent MPCs and Force, Akai have proved that mass-market production stations can stand up against a DAW. No surprise, then, that Roland have chosen now to breathe new life into the MC line. While the name and basic principle is the same, the MC-707 isn’t simply an update to those earlier grooveboxes.
From sketching the foundations of a club track to acting as the centrepiece of a live setup, this latest MC ticks a lot of boxes
The MC-707 lands as a member of the brand’s Aira line, and design-wise it’s more like the recent TR-8S than the MC-808 or MC-909. (And no, there’s no D-Beam here; for better or worse!)”
“In total, the MC-707 offers eight tracks, controlled and edited via its central bank of channel strips. Each track can be assigned either a Tone (polyphonic instrument), Drum (multi-part drum kit) or Looper (audio recorder). Recording and sequencing of these elements is then handled by the pads and sequencer buttons, to create Clips, which are recorded, arranged and played using a grid system like Ableton Live’s Clip View.”
“ZEN-Core
Both Drum and Tone generators make use of Roland’s new ZEN-Core engine, using a mixture of PCM samples and virtual analogue. That means there’s no Analog Circuit Behaviour (ACB) tech – the much hyped engine used for the Boutique range and the TR-8S’s drum emulations.
Despite this, the MC-707 is packed with sounds from Roland’s past, which on the whole sound excellent. There are multiple varieties of drum kits based around sounds from each of the company’s classic groove boxes and instrument patches that take influence from Junos, Jupiters, 101 basslines and more.
In total there are more than 3,000 Tone presets and 80 preset Drum kits, each made up of 16 individual drum sounds. The Tone and Drum generators are more than just preset players though; each has a decent amount of sound shaping parameters. Drum sounds can have each individual sample tune shaped, while the Tone engine offers a simple subtractive synth engine, whereby the source sound can be filtered, shaped and have effects applied. ”

AMD Ryzen 7 3800X Benchmarks Leaked, Crushes Core i9 9900K in Multi-threaded Performance
The Ryzen 7 3800X delivers a multi-core score of over 34 thousand points and a single core score of over 54 hundred points in Geekbench 4. The CPU was paired with a prototype X470 chipset motherboard and entry level 16GB DDR4 memory with modest speeds. Despite being hamstrung by lackluster memory, the 3800X put on an impressive showing.
To put these figures into context, Intel’s similarly priced core i7 9700K scores ~28400 points and the flagship i9 9900K delivers no more than ~31500 points in the same test. But thanks to very aggressive boost clocks, the Intel chips manage to claw back some ground and maintain roughly a 10% advantage in single threaded performance in the same test against AMD’s newcomer.
At $399 the Ryzen 7 3800X is set to compete against Intel’s core i7 9700K which currently sells for just over $400 at most major e-tailers. Although according to recent news, Intel is in fact preparing sweeping price cuts of up to 15% across its 9000 series lineup, including the i9 9900k, i7 9700K and i5 9600K. It will be very interesting to see if these new prices cuts are going to be enough to sway some potential Ryzen 3000 series buyers to reconsider Intel. In the meantime, stay tuned for more juicy leaks in the coming days.”

“We’re less than two weeks away from the official release of AMD’s highly anticipated 7nm based Ryzen 3000 series processors and leaks around the newcomers show absolutely no signs of slowing down. This latest one is nothing short of a whopper, so let’s dig straight into the juicy bits!
Just a little under three weeks ago a 16 core monster of a chip based on AMD’s next generation Zen 2 microarchitecture was leaked. Just a couple of days later the CPU was confirmed and announced as the Ryzen 9 3950X, the world’s first ever “gaming” 16 core processor and the fastest ever of its kind to date.

The Ryzen 9 3950X runs at a base clock speed of 3.5GHz and a boost of 4.7GHz and if you’re reading this you probably already know that. But, it’s important because the leaked Ryzen 3000 series 16 core processor that is the subject of this article does not run at those frequencies, and as such may be a different chip entirely.
AMD Ryzen 3000 Series 16 Core CPU With 5.2 GHz All-Core Clock Leaked
So, what do the numbers on this mysterious new chip look like?
It’s a 16 core, 32 thread processor with a stock base frequency of 3.3GHz, 200MHz below that of the Ryzen 9 3950X. BUT, and this is crucial, it is running on an all-core overclocked frequency of 5.2 GHz.”

“Either way you slice this, it tells us that AMD’s Zen 2 is capable of reaching incredibly high clock speeds, even in high core count SKUs. This particular chip was paired with fairly quick DDR4 memory and a top-end MSI motherboard. Again, pointing towards the likelihood that this is AMD testing the overclocking limits of its 16 core chips and is a very exciting indicator of what we may come to expect from the 3950X.”
“To the right is AMD’s 16 core 5.2 GHz monster and to the left is Intel’s fastest ever desktop processor the 18 core $2000 i9 9980XE. And no, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you, the two thousand bucks chip with two more cores is in fact losing. But that’s not necessarily surprising.
After all we’ve already seen professional overclockers break multiple performance records on the eve of the Ryzen 9 3950X’s announcement. And it’s very likely that exotic cooling is at play here to maintain such a high all-core frequency. With that being said, we can’t wait for July 7th to see what AMD’s shiny new Zen 2 microarchitecture and the 7nm process is truly capable of.”

Before we get into the juicy bits, of which there’s a ton! I must point out that none of the specifications or prices are confirmed by any stretch, so take this with a grain of salt as with any leak or rumor. Without any further ado, let’s get into it!
AMD Ryzen 3 3300X, 3300 & 3300G – 6 Cores, Upto 4.3 GHz & $129
In the entry-level segment AMD is allegedly preparing three new Ryzen 3 processors, dubbed the 3300X, 3300 & 3300G. The latter of which features integrated Navi graphics while the two former SKUs are CPU only parts.
Design mock-up via AdoredTV
All three feature six 7nm Zen 2 cores and 12 execution threads. The 3300G features an integrated 15 compute unit Navi 12 GPU die and will be the first ever six core desktop APU from the company. The Ryzen 3 3300X will be the fastest six core Ryzen part that you can get your hands on, with a boost clock of 4.3 GHz and a TDP of 65W. The Ryzen 3 3300G is also rated at 65W, whilst the 3300 is rated at a more frugal 50W.

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, 3700 – 12 Cores, Upto 5.0 GHz & $329
In the high-end segment we’re looking at two new Ryzen 7 parts, both of which are CPU only products. This is because the company is said to be leveraging similar chiplet design to what we’ve already seen with its upcoming EPYC 2 server parts.
Design mock-up via AdoredTV
In this case utilizing two Zen 2 dies to make a high core count product. Both chips feature 12 cores and 24 execution threads. The Ryzen 7 3700X is rated at 105W whilst the 3700 is rated at a slightly more tame 95W.

AMD Ryzen 9 3850X, 3800X – 16 Cores, Upto 5.1 GHz & $499
At the very top-end of the scale the company is preparing two absolutely monstrous chips, each featuring two full 8 core Zen 2 dies for a total of 16 cores and 32 threads per processor.
The Ryzen 9 3850X is quite the specimen, with a 135W TDP rating and a boost clock of 5.1 GHz it’s an absolute beast. We’re looking at more than double the performance of the fastest AM4 CPU available on-shelves today.

Ryzen 9 3850X 16/32 4.3GHz 5.1GHz 135W $499 May
AMD is Doubling Down on Ryzen & AM4, Literally
We’re clearly seeing the effect of the company’s highly versatile die stacking strategy here, which has been in the works for over a decade. It allows the company to mix and match different logic dies to make different types of products as we’re seeing here where the high-end Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 chips are actually made up of two Zen 2 dies, while the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3 APU parts are made of a CPU and a GPU die connected via Infinity Fabric.
By using multiple small and simple dies to build a complex product, instead of designing a large and complicated monolithic die, AMD can save costs by leveraging different manufacturing technologies for every different die in the same chip, improve yields because the dies are so small and boost performance by optimizing each die for the specific type of logic that’s on it.
All in all if this leak is to be believed the Ryzen 3000 series is going to be one hell of a CPU family.

Scientists building technology to record dreams
“MYSTERIOUS_FACTS
Scientists building technology to record dreams
…
Ranjan Kumar
Posted On May 12, 2019
the 1991 apocalyptic sci-fi film Until the End of the World, director Wim Wenders creates a vision of the future that, in a few ways, manages to mirror aspects of life in 2019. In the film, a virtual reality (VR) headset-like device is developed that gives blind people a form of sight. But as the film goes on, the device is transformed into a tool that records dreams, and a darker side of humanity comes to light: People become addicted to their subconscious storylines, spending all their time sleeping and waking only to watch their dreams.
The device looks nearly identical to an Oculus headset, but there are more similarities between our current reality and Wenders’ 30-year-old fantasy than that alone. Today, a team of researchers from universities across the country is working on a project dedicated to figuring out how to recreate our nighttime lives on the screen. And like Until the End of the World, it’s unclear what this technology might be used for.
The as-of-yet-unnamed project is the brainchild of independent dream researcher Daniel Oldis and represents a continuation of a question he and others in his field began exploring decades ago: Are dreams learning experiences, and can behaviors in waking life be influenced by what people dream about? Oldis and others concluded that the answer must be yes based on one key point: When people dream, their bodies move and react.
“Your eyes, the muscles in your body, it’s just like you’re awake. You’re responding to the dream story,” Oldis says. “Like in waking life, the body is learning from different experiences. We learn from dreams, and it affects our personality.”
The debate over whether dreams have meaning is a contentious topic among psychologists and neurologists and has been for decades. While some experts believe that dreams are simply the result of neurons in the brain firing at random, other researchers believe that dreams hold deep meaning for our lives and are even linked to our overall health. There’s some evidence to back up the argument. Studies have found that dreaming helps us process emotions, turn our short-term memories to long-term ones, and potentially ward off depression.
In the tradition of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, some psychologists today still use dreams in therapy to help people better understand themselves and their psyches. Rubin Naiman, PhD, is one such psychologist. A sleep and dream expert with the University of Arizona’s Center for Integrative Medicine, Naiman not only advocates for the power of dreams but also believes society is in the midst of an “epidemic of dream loss,” spurred on by the collective brush-off our culture has given to these nightly visions.
“We are so dismissive about dreams,” he says. “It’s a huge issue. It’s kind of like pretending the moon doesn’t exist.”
In the 1970s, Oldis was involved in early dream research that focused on whether dreams had an effect on our waking lives. It was at this time when researchers discovered that people bodies move while they dream. While this was important information, it became newly relevant to Oldis in 2014, when he read about researchers in Japan who were capturing images from dreams using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). That got him thinking: Why not also record their movements? And while you’re at it, why not speech as well?
“If you put that all together, what you have is a movie,” Oldis says.
That became his new research question: Can dreams be turned into watchable movies? This led Oldis to partner with the University of Texas at Austin’s Cognitive Neuroscience Lab in 2017 to track the motor behavior of a dreamer. By using an electromyogram (EGM) to measure nerve impulses to the muscles, the researchers successfully recorded the movements of a subject’s dreams, which Oldis turned into a walking avatar that he presented at the International Association for the Study of Dreams in 2017?—?the first step to making a dream movie.
“This is like the early years of the space race,” he says. “But in this case, we’re going into the dream space.”
Oldis has also done some early work around recording dream speech. By attaching electrodes to a sleeper’s speech muscles, he was able to pick up some elements of their dream dialogues, though full sentences and meanings could not be deciphered. He plans to run another experiment at the University of Texas at Austin this fall that he hopes will result in complete speech readings.
In addition to conducting those experiments, Oldis has compiled a team of nearly two dozen dream researchers, neurobiologists, sleep scientists, and psychologists (which he calls “the dream team”) from academic institutions and organizations across the country?—?including the UCLA School of Medicine, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and more?—?to put all the components together and create the first dream movie. Next summer, the team will take over a recording studio in Burbank, California. They’ll bring in a mobile MRI and attempt to record the movement, speech, and images from the full dreams of three or four sleeping subjects.
It’s unclear as of now whether this will be possible, and there’s a lot of work left to be done before it is. The biggest challenge Oldis faces is recording images. Though he hasn’t run an experiment to capture what the dreamer is seeing, a team at Kyoto University has. Led by neuroscientist Yukiyasu Kamitani, the researchers found that through the use of fMRI, “deep images” can be reconstructed from a waking person’s mind?—?when they think of an owl, for example, the vague shape of an owl can be seen.
The way it works is that the team built a computer proxy for the brain, a deep neural network (DNN) that can pull information from different levels of the brain’s visual system, from the simple visual of light all the way to more complex visuals like faces. From there, the DNN essentially reconstructs these layers to recreate images from the brain. Eventually, Kamitani wants to use his research to record the images of dreams.
Oldis’ dream team is not working with Kamitani, but next summer, they plan to use a similar method to reconstruct the visions of a lucid dream, or one in which the dreamer is in control and aware that they are dreaming. This will allow Oldis to tell the dreamer what to dream and test whether the movement, speech, and images he manages to record match up with the actual dream.
Of course, everything Oldis has done and plans to do thus far is a test to see if it’s possible to record our dreams. The other piece of the puzzle is why?—?and what might be gained from this kind of technology?
“Like the moon, it’s there. So you gotta try,” he says. “As Kennedy would say, ‘We’re going to get to the dream in this decade not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard.’ And hopefully it’s of value.”
Not everyone thinks it is. Naiman has been recruited to join Oldis’ dream team in order to play what Oldis calls the devil’s advocate role—or, as Naiman puts it, the angel’s advocate.
“There’s something demonic in what he’s doing,” Naiman says. “I don’t mean that literally?—?I respect what he’s doing… But the downside to it is there are so many attempts to represent the dream in waking life rather than to enter the dream directly. The way we approach dreaming is we pull the fish out of water. But eventually we want to learn to breathe underwater, don’t we?”
At the same time, Naiman laments the sidelining of dreams in our culture and says anything that brings attention to them could be useful, a sentiment echoed by fellow dream researcher and psychologist Deirdre Barrett, PhD, of Harvard Medical School.
“The benefit I see is a new way of seeing dreams,” she says. “And seeing dreams as some piece of our objective brain content could add something to the information we have on them.”
If Oldis’ vision of accurately recreating a full dream as a digital recording comes to fruition, Barrett also says there could be some therapeutic function. Because some people don’t remember their dreams or remember only bits and pieces, being able to play them back in full could add important insight into a patient’s state of mind. But, she says, this is all hugely speculative. After all, the recordings would have to be extremely accurate to capture more than just the basic movement and speech of a dream, and psychologists who work with dreams are more focused on the emotional content than the physical.
“None of these groups are trying to make emotional data a part of it, and there’s not an obvious visual or auditory representation of that,” Barrett says. “And yet, as we know from our own dreams, what we’re feeling in them is a hugely important part. The emotions are a lot of what we’re talking about when we’re talking about our dreams.”
Oldis’ project is still at the beginning stages. It could be 10 to 20 years before there’s technology that can record a full dream movie, he says, let alone a way to capture dreams from the comfort of people’s homes. Until then, it’s unknown what dreams may come?—?or what scientists might do with them when they do.”

Becoming immortal – VPRO documentary – 2018
“Becoming immortal – VPRO documentary – 2018”
“Am I afraid of death? You bet I am, death sounds boring, I mean it’s just like it’s the end of everything, death there’s no way back from, with cryonics we’re talking about stopping death, so that we have a chance of living vastly extended lifespans, but death, real death means all the information that was once in your body, all that information is gone, irretrievably, maybe fear isn’t the right word, because obviously you’re not experiencing anything when that happens you’re not feeling anything, maybe a better word to say is a protest or detesting the idea of just going out of existence. (Linda Chamberlain)”
“Certainly it’s sort of frustrating to imagine that there is this ticking clock that we have in ourselves shortening of the telomeres with every cell division and some ultimate limit that we’re approaching, but I don’t actually believe it’s the ultimate limit, I think 80 years or 100 years or 120 years is far too short in a universe with so many things to learn and to do and our brains don’t lose their ability to learn, even late in life, so if we could just take care of the rest of the body and also prevent neuro degeneration, I think there are many other lifetimes that we could happily fill with activity and fun and excitement. (Hannu Rajaniemi)”
“by definition restore the function both mental and physical of the body but that’s very different from the way that
people have historically thought about how to address aging, either by directly attacking the symptoms of old age as if they were normal diseases like infections or alternatively by trying to clean up the way the body works, so that it just ages more slowly in the first place, so I think there’s a good chance, maybe a 50/50 chance that people in their thirties or forties will be able to avoid the ill health of old age, however long they live and then of course the correspondingly better chance that people who are let’s say kids today now if you are actually more than 40 now, if you’re 60 or 70 then of course you’ve got less chance, but again it depends who you are as well, not every one of the same chronological age has the same biological age, I’m 54 but I still think I’ve got a pretty good chance of benefiting from all of this, because I’m biologically about 40. (Aubrey de Grey)”
because the ideas that I put forward were very radical very different from the approaches that people thought were realistic before I came alone and you know that’s perfectly normal if you’re pioneering you know that by
definition that means you’ve got new ideas and those new ideas are not going to be obviously right to everybody who immediately then so you know I feel that if if you’re not pissing anybody off in this life then you’re probably not making much of a difference. (Aubrey de Grey)”
“Silicon Valley is the Olympus of our times where the gods and demigods of Tech have gathered and now make decisions that affect the entire world, so maybe it’s not surprising that they are also thinking about life extension and immortality you can see this kind of Hubris as a consequence of the way Silicon Valley has evolved, because you have had sort of these enormous successes, created by people who started almost from from from nothing who sort of built incredibly successful companies around around technological innovations that that are now worth hundreds of billions of dollars and and effective lives of billion literally billions of people, so if you see that happening in a very short span of time it’s quite natural to say well I’m not going to be constrained by the limits of biology just like we we disrupted taxis or disrupted search or social networks we can do the same for biology but I think there are also examples that kind of show that perhaps people who come from a tech background are not always good at judging the risks and the difficulties associated with biology. (Hannu Rajaniemi)”
“so we can already rejuvenate improve and optimize our cells and DNA or replace entire body parts that no longer function properly
but if our bodies are already simply do-it-yourself kits and you can just
rebuild yourself in anywhere you want what will the people of the future look like, especially if for example you have only had your head frozen at Alcor.”
“Many of our members want to come back in a physical human body that looks pretty much like, maybe they named the age 25, that seems to be a very popular age for people to aspire to, but many like me also would really rather come back in something more glamorous than the biological body, for me personally, I don’t really want to come back as a biological entity, it’s nice, but it’s very limited, it’s very fragile and so my preference is to bring me back, give me a body that’s made up of nanobots, sometimes called nanobots warm, just as the human body is made up of trillions of biological cells that work together, the swarm can work together to create the body that you want and it can be changed anytime you want, unlike a biological body, so if I want to go skiing on mars, on olympus moons, I don’t have to worry about the fact that there’s no oxygen there, I can have a body that can function without oxygen, that kind of thing is what I’m more interested in, personally. (Linda Chamberlain)”
“When I do so I’m a lot more careful than most people to take into account the uncertainties that are involved. What people go wrong is they’ll say, well, okay, so supposing we fix aging , there might be this problem in particular, they’ll often make a completely crazy assumption, which is that everything else is just not going to happen … that the rest of the world or other technology they’re going to be more or less what we have today you know people forget but we’ve got all this automation coming and they’ll say oh dear a bit not do this we’ll never be able to pay the pensions. I mean that’s just so brain-dead when you think you know the guy – the idea of pensions is just gonna have to go away completely, where and hardly anyone even who needs to have a job at all and you know where are we gonna put all the people yeah people will say that but hello you know overpopulation we have it today it’s bad today we’ve got climate change and everything but we’re already fixing that problem by developing ways to make people pollute less, especially of course renewable energy to minimize use of fossil fuels, but also you know desalination, artificial meats, all those things, so the carrying capacity of the Planet absolutely certain to rise far faster than the population of the planet Rises. I mean what’s going on!
Certainly in Silicon Valley there are lots of people who are more like me more I would say rational about this kind of thing you know they understand that their own efforts may help, they make a difference for their own chances or other people’s chances of actually making the cruve, it’s very important for people to have understand that this really is humanity’s biggest problem and furthermore that it’s a problem that we are in striking distance to solving. (Aubrey de Grey)”
“So when we look at the u.s. we look at a country that has the longest life spans and the shortest life spans in the same country due to the lack of access of Health due to insurance companies and their really criminal policies and so you know this is something that gene therapy will give us the opportunity to do is equalize health across everyone, if gene therapies can give be given like immunizations are given today at a very low cost but they have very high value of keeping people healthier longer, the great thing about gene modulation in the future is not just to eradicate the diseases of aging but to actually allow humans to work together to modulate the hormones that drive us to war and disaster and terrorism to take those type of things and actually create genetic profiles that will create people who just work towards the bigger goal and can work together in happiness, in harmony. (Liz Parrish)”
